Tropic Falls at OWA Marks National Water Safety Month 2026

Promoting Awareness, Building Skills, and Protecting Families

May 15, 2026

Foley, Ala. — As summer approaches and families prepare for long days in and around the water, Tropic Falls at OWA is once again recognizing National Water Safety Month, a nationwide initiative each May that underscores the importance of safe habits in and around pools, waterparks, and natural waterways. In addition, National Learn to Swim Day is Saturday May 16, a day designated to promote life-long water safety. Created in 2012 to address the reality that half of Americans don’t know how to swim, this day is a reminder, especially before Memorial Day weekend, that swimming is a critical safety skill.

National Water Safety Month and National Learn to Swim Day both bring together waterparks, recreation centers, and safety organizations across the country to highlight drowning prevention and responsible water practices. Tropic Falls proudly joins that effort, continuing its commitment to guest safety and community awareness.

Safety remains the foundation of operations at Tropic Falls. Every lifeguard completes 27 to 29 hours of specialized training and orientation before their first shift, in addition to the certifications required prior to hiring. Once on the team, lifeguards participate in a minimum of four hours of ongoing monthly training, ensuring skills remain sharp throughout the season. Several Tropic Falls lifeguards have recently exceeded national testing standards during safety audits—an achievement that reflects both rigorous preparation and personal dedication.

“Safety is our top priority at OWA Parks & Resort. National Water Safety Month is an important opportunity to highlight the practices that reduce risk and create a safe environment for every guest,” said Ken Leone, OWA Parks & Resort Property Manager. “Our team takes this responsibility very seriously everyday. Their training, focus, and professionalism set the tone for the entire season.”

Key Water Safety Tips from the Tropic Falls Team

  • Designate a Water Watcher: Never leave children unsupervised in or near water. A responsible adult should actively watch swimmers at all times.
  • Follow posted rules and requirements: Age, height, weight, and health guidelines exist for safety. Ask lifeguards or staff if you’re unsure about a ride or attraction.
  • Check water first if a child is missing: Seconds matter. Always look in pools or nearby bodies of water immediately.
  • Keep a phone nearby: Quick access to 911 can save lives.
  • Use Coast Guard–approved life jackets: Weak or non-swimmers should wear properly fitted life jackets. Tropic Falls provides complimentary jackets in multiple sizes.
  • Learn to swim: Enroll children and adults in swim lessons to build essential water survival skills.
  • Take breaks and reapply sunscreen: Rest, hydrate, and reapply sunscreen regularly, even on cloudy days.
  • Practice proper hygiene: Shower before and after swimming, wear clean swimwear, and use swim diapers for those diaper dependent
  • Work as a team: Water safety is a shared responsibility between swimmers and trained safety personnel.

National Water Safety Month reinforces a simple truth: water safety saves lives. By educating families, supporting community programs, and maintaining the highest safety standards, Tropic Falls at OWA continues its mission to make every visit both fun and safe.
